If your back aches after a day at the desk, the chair is often part of the reason. A good ergonomic chair won’t fix everything on its own, but the right features, set up properly, make sitting for long hours far more comfortable. Here is what to look for.
Please note: this guide is general advice about chairs, not medical advice. If you have ongoing or severe back pain, see a doctor or physiotherapist.

Even the best chair needs five minutes of setup. Follow our office chair setup guide: seat height, seat depth, lower-back support, tilt and arms, in that order. Then change position often and stand up every half hour or so. Moving regularly matters as much as the chair.
There is no single best chair for everyone. Look for adjustable lower-back support, adjustable seat depth (or the right size) and a recline that moves with you. The Herman Miller Aeron and Embody, the Interstuhl DAILY/RUNNER 152II and the Studio Office Flux all have these features. Trying them is the best way to choose.
Either can be good. What matters more is the support and the fit. Mesh is cooler on warm days; a padded seat can feel softer. Read mesh or upholstered office chair.
A chair can make sitting more comfortable and support a better posture, but it isn’t a treatment. If you have ongoing pain, see a doctor or physiotherapist.
