A home office should be comfortable enough for a full working day and pleasant enough that you want to sit down in it. Five things make the difference: where you put the desk, the chair, the light, a tidy surface and a few personal touches.
If you can, place the desk side-on to a window. You get daylight without glare on the screen or the sun in your eyes. Avoid sitting with your back to a bright window, which puts your face in shadow on video calls. A spot you can close off from the rest of the home helps you switch off at the end of the day.
You will spend more time in the chair than with anything else in the room, so it is worth getting right. Choose one with adjustable height, seat depth and lower-back support, then set it up properly with our five-minute setup guide.
With your arms relaxed, your keyboard should sit at about elbow height. Place the screen an arm’s length away, with the top at or slightly below eye level. A laptop on its own is too low for long days: raise it on a stand and use a separate keyboard. Looking for a desk? Browse our furniture and Под заказ desks from HAY and Muuto.

A clear desk is easier to work at and nicer to look at. Give everything a place: a tray or box for small items, a notebook and pen within reach, and cables gathered behind the desk. Then add one or two things you enjoy looking at: a plant in a good vase, a mirror, a print.
The chair. You sit in it all day, and an adjustable chair set up for your body makes the biggest difference to how you feel at the end of the day.
Ideally side-on to a window, so you get daylight without glare on the screen or light behind you on video calls.
A task lamp that lights the work surface without shining into your eyes, plus a second, softer light in the room for the evening.
